2.0 Tools Discovery (#20)

It was fascinating to look at the range of tools here. Looked at tools in Books, Classifieds, Employment, Events, Guides, Organization, Maps, Mapping, Widgets, Visual Arts (somewhat of a misnomer; it's more about data visualization and mapping than arts, but it's interesting), Self Publishing and Travel. Some highlights:

Google Earth (maps) -you can capture your travel thru Google Earth in real-time, and narrate your virtual journey to save and share. So, in addition to using photos and video to record a trip to Australia, you can show the aerial view in motion - zooming over Sydney Harbor, etc.
Wayfaring and Community Maps (mapping) - create personalized maps; add your own landmarks, comments, highlights; collaborate with others; share; use for organizations, communities, friends. It's about mapping and sharing your own view of an area or a trip.
Visual Complexity (Visual Arts) - just interesting to look at. It's a resource space for "anyone interested in the visualization of complex networks", illustrating different methods of visualization. Visuals are in categories such as art, biology, social networks, business networks, music, etc. Paris Metro is one of the 'most popular' projects represented.
Lulu (Books) - self publish your own books, poetry collections, photo albums, cookbooks, ebooks, etc. The steps are layed out cleanly (selecting bindings, covers, etc), and there are tools for marketing and distribution. You can also see what others have published thru this site.

Also looked at the summary info on Reference Managers (per the Comment below Maura's entry), which are used heavily in academic and corporate settings; they can be useful in any setting for managing article libraries and generating bibliographies. Of course, most of them aren't free. EndNote is the one I'm most familiar with.
